He has been criticised for gamesmanship (perhaps quite fairly) but I have never understood the allegation that he makes F1 boring. To criticise a man for excelling in his chosen field seems bizarre in the extreme: the list of records held by Schumi is even more impressive when one looks at the comparative paucity of F1 records not held by him. To be honest, I would not be surprised if der Regenmeister picked a damp day in 2027 to come back and break Juan Manuel Bordeu’s record as a 56 year old in the sport.

After yesterday’s qualifying session, Schumacher commented that “if nine cars go slower than myself and I can pass then I can win. It’s a pretty simple calculation.”
I would not be surprised to see this happen and, for the first time, I truly hope that he finishes today on the podium.
