BBpress guide

There is now a guide to customising BBpress over on Devlounge. This could prove handy now that I’ve started to trial BBpress on the Fulwood Methodist Church site.

I have found that this forum software integrates very nicely with WordPress but the default template is, in my opinion, an awful mess of tiny fonts (‘font-size: 62.5%‘!) and impenetrable DIVs.

I had made some progress with integrating the design of the fora with that of the rest of the site. Then, I installed BBpress 0.74 over v0.73 and, being a bit dim, lost the changes I had made.

I think the principle benefit of having a forum at the moment is that it presents a less intimidating interface than WordPress.

I haven’t yet upgraded this site to WP 2 but have spent a little while this evening upgrading the Fulwood Methodist site. It was remarkably simple. (Do remember to follow the upgrade instructions and backup just in case!) Some plugins no longer work and one or two needed patching. However, the site was only offline for a few minutes and, as far as the end user is concerned, everything appears to work.

Smart.

I upgraded due to security concerns mentioned at AlexKing.org. Frankly, if this site stops working I’ll be a little miffed. If the Fulwood site dies, I’ll be livid.

Attach-files plugin

The attach-files plugin for WordPress is a piece of cake to set up and install. However, I have found an issue with password-protected posts: a password is required to read the article but not to download the attached file.

Update: this plugin no longer functions correctly under WordPress 2.0.

Accessible WordPress and FMC

I passionately believe that the Fulwood Methodist Church site should be as accessible as possible to all. Jesus, after all, never told his disciples to go out and preach the good news to just the sighted and the user of Internet Explorer. I’ve recently converted the front-end of the site so that it is now powered by WordPress and was pleased to find this post about making WordPress more accessible.

I’m now most of the way to having WAI-AA conformance on that site.
