Disturbingly loud scary noises

I am taking the first year of the Goethe-Institut’s Oberstufe course in Manchester. Tonight, as Maggie (die Lehrerin), was krank, we had an Austrian supply teacher. At 1915 hours our lesson was interrupted by a very long (twenty seconds?), loud, deep bass rumble which initially sounded like thunder.
Thunder, as most are aware, doesn’t rumble for twenty seconds and has a habit of occurring during thunder storms rather than on cloudless, moonlit, calm late Autumn evenings.
Silence in the room. Very scary thoughts. And mention of the word ‘bomb’.
A couple of minutes later we heard the reassuring sound of a police siren. Reassuring because I would imagine that lots of sirens would be the usual response to a bomb.
On the way home I drove past the Maths Tower on Oxford Road. The same amount of the building was there as ninety minutes previously. Listening to BBC GMR, I learnt that no bombs had exploded in the city that day. This leaves me with two questions: what on earth caused that sound? And would you mind warning me next time?
