Right-winger: Gordon Connelly
Right winger Gordon Connelly was recruited by York only four days into the last season after a disastrous start. City had been chasing the out of contract 21-year-old Scot all summer after he impressed whilst playing for Airdrie in a pre-season tournament at Bootham Crescent. However, Airdie's price evaluation of Connelly was somewhat large and Connelly threatened to go abroad.
The on/off saga came to an end when City paid Airdrie £70 000 for the former Rangers schoolboy. Connelly's chances at Airdrie were surprisingly limited but he became an instant hit with City with his pace and skill. Unfortunately Gordon seemed to lose all confidence after that good start and his inability to cross a ball or beat a full-back became particularly frustrating and saw him sent home early into 1999 and still looking well below par. He did not play for York following Alan Little's replacement by Neil Thompson.
