Wing back: Julian Hails
Julian Hails joined Southend on a free transfer from Fulham in December 1994. At Fulham he had played on the right wing but Paul Byrne's dominance of that rôle at Southend forced him to play on the left under Ronnie Whelan.
Alvin Martin decided early on in the 1997 / 98 season that Hails deserved the chance to play in his favoured right back position and he has since outplayed the rest of the team, obtaining five yellow cards in the process.
He was voted last season's Player of the Year and has signed a new three-year contract to boost Southend's chances of a quick return to the Second [no! First!] Division.
Having re-signed Julian, Alvin Martin said:
I couldn't be more delighted. Julian's a terrific professional and is the sort of winner I want in our dressing room.
Martin said that Hails fully deserved the length of his new contract as:
anyone who shows the same appetite and commitment deserves the club to show them similar loyalty. Hails will certainly add competition for places at the back, I'm sure players like young Andy Harris will push him hard for a first-team spot.
