Attacking midfielder: Steve McGavin
Steve McGavin joined the Blues from Wycombe Wanderers at the beginning of February 1999 in order to ease the current crisis in the centre of midfield. Alvin said:
Steve is the sort of player who can unlock defences. He can create chances for our front men as well as take them himself and I'm sure he'll do a good job for us.
According to BBC Essex this is initially a one month loan deal but he could be signed permanently if he impresses Alvin.
He is looking forward to rebuilding his career and, despite also being wanted by Peterborough and Colchester, is ready to commit himself to the Shrimpers in the long-term.
I've spoken to a lot of clubs and I know things aren't going well at Roots Hall at the moment, but Southend are an ambitious club and I want to stay here for the next couple of years.
He left Wycombe, following two family bereavements, so that his family could move back to Colchester. This season he has struggled with a foot injury and has only made one league and three reserve appearances for the Chairboys.
At the end of June 1999, Steve joined Northampton Town on a short-term contract.
