Defender / midfielder: Rob Newman

Rob Newman
  • Date of birth: 13th December 1963
  • Height: 6’2”
  • Weight: 12 stone
  • Playing career: Bristol City (52 goals, 394 appearances); Norwich City (17 goals, 249 games)

Rob Newman signed for Southend from Norwich City on 26th June 1998. He was popular at Wigan Athletic, where he went on loan towards the end of last season (he played against us in our rout of Wigan at Springfield Park).

He appears very much to be a utility player: according to the 1995 PFA Guide to Players he can play in midfield, at centre-back, or at full back... Rob was even pressed in to service as a striker... on several occasions. Against Sheffield United he spent 45 minutes in goal when Bryan Gunn was sent off but his preferred position is in the heart of the defence where he is strong in the air.

Newman is a free-kick specialist and is reputed to have the hardest shot in England as a result of winning a dead ball competition at Wembley with an 85 mph shot.
