Goalkeeper: Simon Royce

Royce Long-serving keeper Simon Royce joined Charlton Athletic on a free transfer under the Bosman ruling on 26th June 1998. He has got a two-year contract. He joins fellow ex-Shrimper Chris Powell, who has been playing for Derby County for the last few years.

Both Sheffield United and Watford had expressed an interest in the player who made over 170 appearances for the Shrimpers since joining from Heybridge Swifts in 1991.

Royce was well-liked by Southend fans and was sorely missed when a red card, in his last season with the club, led to him being replaced by ex-Everton and Wales keeper Neville Southall for ten (?) weeks. His sidelining did nothing to boost his desire to stay with the club.
