I was pleased to see that the Government is to ban junk food in schools but…
I sent the following email to my local MP on 16 September 2005 19:28:13 BST. I wonder whether Mr. H. intends to reply or is the Labour Party too busy working on its manicure?
Dear Mr. Hendrick,
I have just been reading an article on the BBC’s website concerning California’s ban on sugary drinks and ‘junk’ foods in schools. As a secondary school teacher, faced by the consequences of glucose-fuelled students in the afternoons, and a parent who hopes not to see his daughter habitually consuming such products, I applaud the government’s recent decision to support improvements to school meals.
I must, however, question whether 50 pence can truly be sufficient to produce a high quality meal, particularly considering the numbers of students for whom this would be their only hot meal of the day.
In my opinion, a particular problem is that the consumption of unhealthy meals is condoned in schools where it is not unusual to see student after student buying a plate of chips with gravy, even when a healthier alternative is available. To this end, I ask that you support the Children’s Food Bill. Please sign EDM 378 and lobby the Secretary of State for Education and Skills, and the Secretary of State for Health, to adopt the Bill introduce by Mary Creagh MP.
The Bill proposes to protect children from the marketing of unhealthy food and drink products, introduce a legal minimum nutritional standard for all school meals, prohibit the sale of unhealthy food and drink products from school vending machines, ensure compulsory food education and related practical skills in the national curriculum and place a duty on the government to promote healthy foods to children.
Would you please inform Mary Creagh’s office that you intend to be present at the Bill’s Second Reading on Friday, 28th October.
I also look forward to hearing that you have signed EDM 378 and about your discussions with the Secretaries of State.
Yours sincerely,
Luke Bosman

Mark Hendrick: waste of a good seat?
I posted a short while ago about how I had contacted my local MP about a fairly uncontentious issue.
Have I received a reply yet? Have I heck as like.
Oh, and this chap is so convinced that we need to give up our liberty to remain free that he voted…
Swift response from Mark Hendrick’s office
I have just received a phone call from Mark Hendrick’s Parliamentary Assistant in response to the fax I ended up sending through WriteToThem.com on Saturday. Ms. Warhurst, for such is her name, stated that they were unable to find an email from …
