30 miles

I set off this morning before breakfast thinking of attempting Jeffrey Hill, one of Lancashire’s more strenuous climbs. After seven miles cycling into a headwind I thought better of it and headed for Chipping. Longridge - Chipping - Beacon Fell - Inglewhite - Preston

The headwind had sapped much of my energy by the time I left Chipping, which is incidentally a tremendously picturesque little village in the middle of nowhere, leaving me glad that I had specified the triple chainring (30-39-50T) rather than the double (39-53T) when ordering the bike.

Non-nerds will be excited to know that at 80rpm this gives me a range between 7.5 mph and 26.1 mph on the gearing. The double would give me between 9.8 and 27.6 mph.

Fortunately, the wind kept up as I had averaged only around ten miles an hour thus far. Apart from a circuit of Beacon Fell it was downhill almost all the way now and the tailwind helped me up to around 24 mph.

It is probably more than ten years since I’ve cycled 30 miles in one go. I must be mad to have stopped.
